EASY TIPS FOR CARING FOR YOUR WOODEN KITCHEN TOOLS
The use of wood in the kitchen add a cozy vibe to your cooking space, but these items need a little TLC to stay in tip-top shape. Don't worry though - caring for wood in the kitchen is easier than you might think! Check out these simple tips to keep the wood in your kitchen looking and working great for years to come.
- Keep It Gentle - When it's time to wash anything wood in the kitchen (cutting board, cheese slicer, serving board, tray, spoons, spatulas, etc.), hand wash with mild soap and warm water. After rinsing, dry immediately with a soft towel and place on the counter to finish air drying. For cutting boards, cheese slicers, serving boards, and trays, dry them on their sides to allow even air flow around the piece while drying, which prevents warping or cracking.
- Keep It Sealed - After several washes, the wood may appear "dry." Rehydrate it with oil to keep it looking fresh. We recommend using Zig's Woodshed Board Butter, which contains wax and keeps your tools looking fresher longer. Just massage it into the wood, let it sit for a few hours, then buff it off. Your wooden kitchen tools will be hydrated and looking as good as new. It's that easy!
- NOTE: It's a good idea to seal any items that have marble by using a stone sealer, which can be found at any hardware store. Take care to avoid getting any stone sealer on the wood.
- For Bread Bow Knives, apply a thin layer of food grade mineral oil to the front and back of the blade before putting on the blade guard.
- Watch the Heat and Cold - Avoid putting anything wooden in the microwave, oven, or refrigerator. Extreme temperatures can cause wood to warp and crack.
- Watch Out for Water - Wood and water aren't always the greatest of friends. Quick rinses are fine, but don't leave anything wooden take a swim in the sink overnight. Prolonged water exposure can make wood sad and soggy. Never put wood in the dishwasher - this can cause warping and cracking.
- Handle with Care - Be gentle when cleaning wooden kitchen tools. Skip the rough scrubbers and abrasive cleaners - they can scratch and damage the wood. And when you're using the cutting board, go easy - no aggressing chopping or using the knife in a sawing motion.
- Storage - Store wooden kitchen tools in a dry place away from moisture and humidity. If stacking, place a soft cloth between each piece to prevent scratches.
- Mix It Up - Give your wooden kitchen tools a break every now and then. Rotating your wooden items helps them last longer and stay in tip-top shape.
With these easy tips, your wooden kitchen tools will staying looking and working like new. Happy Cooking!
